Overview
Milan Global
Product Designer
March '24
Followup health approached Milan Global with their startup which was to provide aftercare articles to patients in the Austin TX area. We had the task of creating their MVP for a presentation in under one month. We created a product that allowed doctors to search for exclusive articles written by Followup to provide their patients with descriptions of how to best take care of themselves.
The team
For this project I worked with a senior developer that was also the CEO of followup to create the component system, and the final website using React Native. Internally within Milan Global I worked with a project manager and a design intern to help me design the brand and deliver our final solution.
The ask
We were asked to provide a redesigned brand for followup, as well as a desktop design of their landing page, and article page.
What we delivered
A component system of responsive assets that allows followup to scale their healthcare library. A delivery system that allows physicians to share articles with patients while keeping search functionality exclusive to the clinic. A responsive article page for patients that adapts to their viewport and language of choice.
Underlying Problem
When research different healthcare articles and news app we realized that most articles were composed of components that were combined to create the article. This broke up information and made it digestible for users. When we discussed this with the Co-CEO who was also a physician they agreed that this would be helpful for patients who were often anxious during their visits.
Research
We conducted a user journey activity with the founder to get a clearer idea of how to design our articles, and physician side of the product. We came to the consensus that our users weren't reading this information on their desktops. Their first impression is on their phones, on the way home, or when they want some quick information. This would most likely be on their mobile devices.
Ideation
When creating our wireframes we operated focused on two breakpoints. For the patients sided portion of the product we focused on mobile and tablet designs, and for the physicians side of the product we created a desktop search panel that also allowed users to send those articles to their patients.
Design System Creation
When Followup approached our company about creating their platform we knew that they had a number of articles in the works but were reaching a bottle neck on the speed they can develop their articles. So when I looked to solve that I analyzed news article apps all over the play store and created sections that I found most commonly. Eventually patterns emerge and I made specific components for these sections that turned into the design system. Whats special about this design system is that their writers can now use components as part of their article template to work faster.
Physician View
The original task was to develop a product that allowed doctors to easily share exclusive followup articles with their patients. Since this was a one month MVP we decided we would use a free Google chrome QR code to allow patients to scan the article at the office and allow them to scroll right away.
Patient View
One of the main pain points our founders wanted to solve for was having patients that didn't speak english as their first language understand medical content. To solve for this we ensured that the library also included right to left components that can adapt to any written language!
Learnings
In true MVP fashion we have so much more to learn
By the time we finished the prototype for all three breakpoints our contract had run up and Followup presented their work at a convention in Austin. With this our work was over and it was time to reflect on the project itself and what we could do better in the future.
1. The user journey reigns supreme
Without the user journey we would have just made a desktop platform that didn't optimize for times our patients would be reading articles on the couch at home, whenever they have a random question, and at the office itself.
2. We need to test
The next step we need to take is testing, while we believe that this design system will create relaxing articles that patients are able to absorb, were not able to validate that until we get it into the hands of users.
3. Fast and Focused
Something that I found amazing during this project was how much we were able to achieve in the span of a single month, in addition to the screens above we designed the followup.com website, and entire brand including the logo and brand identity. We were able to do this by being extremely focused on our end users, and our gaol of having an MVP done by the end of the month.
